Certified life coach training programs: is certification required?

do life coaches need certification

Do you Have to Be Certified To Be a Coach?

This is a common question—do you have to get certification to be a coach the way that therapists have to have a license to practice therapy? The short answer is no, you don’t have to be certified, but let’s instead talk about how ethically you do need to be trained. After all, would you want to work with someone and trust them with aspects of your mental health, who had received no training?

There’s a difference between certification and licensure, as well as between certification and training.

As someone who runs a certified life coach training program, I hear a lot of misinformation and fear about life coaching and coach certification. People wonder whether or not you have to attend a certified life coach training program in order to be a coach (we also hear a lot of murmuring about state regulation of life coaching), and whether or not they must be certified through a specific organization in order to practice as a coach.

Listen in to this Craft of Coaching podcast episode to hear thoughts on what would need to happen in order for the coaching industry to become regulated, and how coaches could adapt in the face of those potential changes.
