learning the craft of coaching
The Craft of Coaching: a way of looking at the coaching skill-set from a holistic place that co-creates the coaching relationship with clients. Let's break down the coaching skill-set into its component parts.
Competencies in the Craft of Coaching
There are key competencies to coaching. Coaching is not “just a conversation.” When you’re undergoing coach training and learning the craft of coaching, you’re studying specific competencies that require skill and attention. They include things like:
Establishing trust and rapport with your client.
Co-creating a shared vision for the coaching relationship, staying client-lead.
Setting a Primary Focus in collaboration with the client so that both coach and client know where things are going.
Asking powerful questions that elicit curiosity and action, getting the client to consider alternative ways of being.
Translating insights in the coaching session into helping your clients take action, without dictating to the client what they “should” do
These are the sorts of competencies that we explore on the Craft of Coaching podcast as well as in our accredited coach training program.
